I spent decades trying to go solar.
Every time I got close, something got in the way. Apartment life. Too many trees. Roof condition. Costs. The obstacles frustrated me and left me feeling hopeless. I explored options, but found everything lacking.
I took my 15 years of experience in the energy industry and led a team to build something to give anyone, anywhere, a real and verified way to participate in the clean energy transition. From that effort Sustainable Choice was born.
OUR VALUES
Our Mission
The mission is simple: remove the obstacles to clean energy participation by making the same verified, gold-standard tools used by corporate climate leaders accessible to every home and small business in America.
My story
It started in my first real job at an environmental non-profit. I was asked to work on climate issues. At the time, I had little exposure or knowledge of the science and the solutions for climate change. After spending several months researching and working alongside our organization's scientists, I knew that our country needed renewable energy to reshape our grid. I wanted to be a part of it. At the time in lived in apartment and saw the first barrier. Without ownership I had little say the energy decisions impacting my living space. I told myself I'd go solar when I owned a home.
Nearly a decade later, I could finally afford a home. It had a beautiful newly replaced roof and nestled in a yard of gorgeous, old oak trees. I got quotes to go solar, but tree shading made it unworkable, and removing the trees cost more than I could afford. Solar was going to have to wait again.
Another decade past and I moved again. I'd done my homework this time. I spent hours on Google Earth checking roof orientations and shading. The home we fell in love with looked promising. Then the inspection revealed the roof needed significant work. The solar decision was pushed out yet again.
A few years went by and I thought I was finally ready. This time, however, the economy had changed and interest rates rose significantly. The economics shifted overnight, and costs were too high. The window I'd waited years to reach quietly closed.
""I had spent 20 years trying to participate in clean energy, and I'd hit every wall along the way."
During this time, I moved from the environmental non-profit into the energy industry itself. Here I began to see that many others shared my same story. My same frustration. My same worry over climate. At the same time, I saw new clean energy market innovations happening that enabled large businesses to participate. Even if they could not build renewable energy on site, Fortune 500 and climate forward companies could become active participants in clean energy through the Renewable Energy Certificate market.
Companies popped up to enable individual residences and business to participate in these markets. Most were greenwashing at best. Others like to include the burning of solid waste, sources of methane, and biomass as clean energy. I was disheartened.
That's when I joined Sol Systems, one of the nation's premier solar independent power producers. It was here at Sol Systems, I realized the same verified mechanism Fortune 500 companies use for their clean energy commitments were sitting completely out of reach for everyday people. The barriers to clean energy participation were structural, not personal.
"The clean energy tools that work have been locked inside Fortune 500 sustainability departments."
This is my origin story and how Sustainable Choice began. At Sol Systems, I was very fortunate to lead a team that built Sustainable Choice. When the opportunity came to take it independent and run it myself, I didn't hesitate. Decades of frustration has a way of making the decision easy. And if you've spent any time trying to go solar or get clean energy from your utility and hitting walls, I suspect you already understand why. I've spent my entire career watching the clean energy transition move too slowly for too many people. This is my answer to that. Not a side project, not a stepping stone. It's the thing I'm here to do.
"I've spent my entire career watching the clean energy transition move too slowly for too many people. This is my answer to that."
If any part of my story sounds familiar, you're exactly who this was built for.
