When a renewable energy project generates 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity and delivers it to the grid, the U.S. tracking system issues a Renewable Energy Certificate. This is a unique, numbered record capturing what was generated, where, when, and from what source. This recognized instrument makes clean energy claims credible and defensible. Without it, clean electricity and conventional electricity are indistinguishable once they enter the grid. The certificate is what separates clean energy from dirty energy.

Sustainable Choice calculates the total clean energy demand by source across our entire membership and purchases the corresponding Renewable Energy Certificates from verified projects. We then retire those certificates. Retirement means they can never be resold, transferred, or claimed by anyone else. Your share of those retirements is calculated from your membership and reflected in your dashboard and monthly statements. The underlying records are logged in national and regional tracking registries.
